To Do Tomorrow
This is as much for my behalf as it is for your bemusement:
Go to dentist, get mah grill did (Not kidding, I’m actually getting a gold cap. It’s a molar, so it’s not like anybody’s going to see it.)
Run to the university and grab a camera for a UT:10 story. Hope and pray that I get a call back from the Student Affairs office on this story, or else I’m in some...
November 2008
Stop.

I’ve found that there are two types of people in this world.
When I say STOP!
do you say,
1. Collaborate and Listen
or
2. Hammertime?
LOL. Hammertime. Definitely Hammertime.
I second the motion for Hammertime.
While I had both cassingles, I’m going to have to lean “Collaborate and Listen” on this one.

Yeah, but you fought over Toledo. History has pretty much shown that you won out by getting the UP over this cesspool.
Fundraiser canned on claims disease affects only... →
Carleton University won’t be holding a popular fundraiser to benefit cystic fibrosis, it was confirmed Tuesday, after the student council passed a motion falsely claiming the disease affects only white men.
It is correct to say that cystic fibrosis “does affect Caucasian populations primarily,” according to Cathleen Morrison, CEO of the CCFF.
However, the term Caucasian...

The Libertarian Moment - Reason Magazine →
The generation raised on the Internet has essentially been raised libertarian, even if they’ve never even heard of the word. Native netizens now entering college exhibit a kind of broad-based tolerance toward every manner of ethnic, religious, and sexual-orientation grouping in a way that would have seemed like science fiction just a generation ago. The products and activities they enjoy and...
CBJ Has Awful Taste in Music →
I thought the song “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm ” was stuck in my head long enough in the early 1990s. You remember: “Once, there was this kid who … ” It was sung in a deep resonant baritone by Crash Test Dummies, a band from Winnipeg.
Well, 16 years later, the song has become a fixture in the Blue Jackets dressing room. Maybe Andrew Murray, proud native of the ‘peg,...
HandBrake 0.9.3 Released! →
lenier:
This is HUGE. Handbreak is brilliant except for one thing - it only takes a DVD (or an eyetv mpeg2 file from say, EyeTV) into it’s beautifully useful video conversion interface.
Now you can throw anything at it. It no longer matters that VisualHub went away. Life is GOOD.
I’m just glad it runs. For whatever reason, 0.9.2 would crash on load for me.

Vocabulary word of the day
magicmolly:
Like any good autodidact or prison inmate, I made lists of vocabulary words as a little kid. Mostly things copied down from Nabokov novels or Eldridge Cleaver essays (being both an autodidact AND a prison inmate, Cleaver was a great source) and taped to my wall for memorization.
One day at community college I used the word “efficient” in conversation and someone said (mincingly):...
Busy busy busy busy. I tell you what, working for UT:10 News is pretty much a second job.
Brandie: You want me to grab you some chapstick?
Me: Nah, I'm good.
Brandie: You sure?
Me: Yeah, I'm fine.
Brandie: Because I'm here to tell you you're not.
Is it just me, or does Jason Statham have the worst agent in Hollywood? He’s a decent actor, but he’s never come remotely close to a role as engaging and interesting as Turkish in Snatch. Honestly, Transporter 3?
What Do the New Deal and World War II Tell Us... →
A guest columnist for the Freakonomics Blog:
If not Keynesian policy, what was the New Deal? It was a broad-ranging mix of spending, regulation, lending, taxation, and monetary policies that can best be described as “See a problem and try to fix it.” In many situations the fix for one problem exacerbated other problems. The programs to raise farm prices hurt work relief recipients, while attempts...
Requiem for a Domain
So long, mcmediasource.com. My little dream of a small business never really went anywhere, not that I promoted it at all. The original idea wasn’t all too great anyways (think of it as voicetracking meets sportscasts).
It lays amongst the other expired domains that i once owned… shagout.net (yuck) and portal13.com (WHY DID I LET THIS GO? WHY WHY WHY?!)
I’m banning myself from Starbucks. I can never order the right thing for the missus. In fact, I’m pretty sure the only reason I order the right thing for myself is because it’s hard to screw up “hot chocolate”.
Nope, from here on out, it’s Tim Horton’s. (Or, Downtown Latte.)
So far, this game has been like Dancing With the Stars. 1-2-3-Kick!

I can’t help but apologize to my wife… she’s trying to watch The Tudors on DVD, and I keep making Jurassic Park jokes every time Sam Neill is on screen.

And it’s real:
“Somebody out there was trying to use my language and trying to speak for me,” he told The Times in a telephone interview. “Rather than have that happen, I thought I’d do it myself.”
O’Neal added: “It’s a fun thing. It’s a way for fans to connect.”
I didn’t get to meet Bruce, but the movie was pretty good. But the crowd firing question at him at the Q&A was fucking ridiculous.
It’s amazing, there’s a scene in the movie that rips the shit out of nerdy fanboys that ask him dumb ass questions, and then those same dumbass questions were asked. I mean, there’s a real life, honest-to-goodess actor sitting in front of...
